I didn’t head for the hills last weekend with the intention of scouting out fall foliage—but it was a welcome surprise. I was seriously considering turning around after a brutal series of switchbacks on the Pitkin Lake Trail in Vail when the path dumped us in a meadow framed by hillsides streaked with yellow, gold, and orange.
